on June 24th, 2012 at 10:10 pmItaly, as usual, has paved it's way to the semis by actually winning a single game – against Ireland – and drawing 3 games (1-1 vs Spain, 1-1 vs Croatia and 0-0 vs England). Germany has won all 4 games and although the scoreline does not indicate it – has been dominant in all 4 (1-0 vs Portugal, 2-1 vs Holland, 2-1 vs Denmark and 4-2 vs Greece). Yogi Lev knows he can't allow his team to be drawn into an OT and the penalty shootout as the Italians have a clear edge in a goalkeeping and the Germans would lose all of their otherwise clear advantage in an open field game. He will throw into the battle all his artillery from the beginning and will force the Italians to commit early in he game knowing that Squadra Azura has yet to play coming from behind. He will be hoping to take an early lead. In addition to all the listed reasons – the Germans will be playing on 5 days rest while the Italians on 3 and in soccer that is a factor.

I'll certainly be on the Germans. But 5 units is too much for me in this game. In a sport where an event (i.e. a goal) is so huge, it is more risky than something such as basketball. Factors that will reduce my bet are the Italian habit of overperforming at tournaments (e.g. they beat Germany in the semi-finals IN GERMANY in 2006 under very similar circumstances) and the aforementioned point where someone like Balotelli could produce a moment of genius and then the Italians 'park the bus'. BOL as always. I like this becoming a forum as unlike covers there is one thread per event.

Great pick for a 5 Units-play, MK! I'm on the germans huge anyway, to win it all and to win each game, as you know. I think Schweinsteigers injury is a concern, but not a big one, as he is dealing with this thing for a very long time now. Though he might not be 100% against Italy, there are alternatives (such as Kroos, Reus or Khedira adding lots of talent to the midfield) – i fully trust in Jogi Löw to adapt in the right way to this situation.
Speaking of "italians parking the bus" => they will, but so did the greeks and we saw what germans offense did to them. Historically, England would have been the easier opponent, but right now, the german team is by far the best we ever had (you really can't compare them with the guys from 2006)
And one more thing: The goalkeepers – Buffon is the reason why Italy reached the semi-finals, plus he is experienced and reached a great reputation (deserved) – but i cant say that he is better than Manuel Neuer. What i can say is, that he will have to work twice as much as Neuer, so he'd better be 2-times better than Neuer, and thats not the case
